India vs England, 4th Test: All-round India cap off resounding series win

India vs England, 4th Test: All-round India cap off resounding series win

NEW DELHI: Ravichandran Ashwin made short work of England's lower order as he picked up his 24th five-wicket haul in Tests to hasten India's march towards a fifth series win in a row. It took them eight overs on Day 5 to clinch the fourth Test by an innings and 36 runs in Mumbai on Monday.

It didn't take India long to get their first scalp with Ashwin trapping overnight batsman Jonny Bairstow in the third over of the morning. After he had added just one to his overnight tally of 50, Ashwin sent Bairstow walking back with the carrom ball, caught plumb in front as the DRS confirmed with all four reds. He then castled Chris Woakes (0) with a conventional offspinner in the next and winded up the proceedings with the scalps of Adil Rashid (2) and James Anderson in his next two, ending with 6/55 and match figures of 12/167.

England lost their final five wickets at the addition of just 15 runs and thus recorded their second Test defeat by an innings after posting 400 or more in the first innings.

The dominance of Indian spinners can be gauged from the fact that they shared 19 of the 20 England wickets to fall over the five days with Bhuvneshwar Kumar being the pacer picking up a lone wicket of opener Keaton Jennings. India have thus regained the Anthony De Mello trophy with a Test to spare. The fifth and final Test starts from December 16 in Chennai.

Brief scores: India
631 (Kohli 235, Vijay 136, Jayant 104; Rashid 4/192) beat England400 and 195 (Root 77, Bairstow 51; Ashwin 6/55) by an innings and 36 runs
